Q: What’s the difference between Vision Insurance and Medical Insurance?
A: We accept both vision insurance and medical insurance. Vision insurance typically covers “routine eye care” or care when blurred vision is the main problem. Vision insurance may cover just the eye exam, or may cover glasses or contact lenses as well. Vision insurance usually doesn’t cover both glasses and contact lenses in the same year, and vision insurance usually covers these things every 1 or 2 years. Medical insurance will cover examination of the eye when there is a problem other than simply blurred vision. Eye pain, eye infection, blind spots in the vision, eye injuries, or other symptoms are generally covered by most major medical insurance. We also bill medical insurance if we are monitoring ongoing conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration.
Vision Insurance we accept:
- Vision Service Plan (VSP)
- EyeMed
Medical Insurance we accept:
- Medicare
- Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield
- PHP
- Aetna
- Humana
- United Healthcare
- PHCS
- First Health
- Sagamore
- Signature Care
- Cigna
Q: What if I don’t have any insurance?
A: We offer a cash discount: Our office offers a cash discount on most exam services if you don’t have insurance that we file. In order to receive the cash discount, you must pay for the exam in full on the day of service, and we must not file any insurance claim for you. By eliminating our administrative costs associated with filing an insurance claim, we can offer this discount. We accept cash, personal checks, and Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and debit cards.
Q: Isn’t it cheaper to buy glasses at the mall or other “Retail Opticals” than at a Doctors office?
A: Usually not. Most retail optical stores have a much higher mark up on frames and lenses than we do at our office. Actually, many times the sale prices at these opticals are still more than our everyday prices on glasses.
Q: Why do you charge an additional fee for a contact lens evaluation?
A: The fitting and evaluation of contact lenses requires many additional tests and measurements than a simple glasses prescription require. Many times, follow up visits are also required to finalize a contact lens prescription, and these are included in the contact lens evaluation fee. The evaluation fee is based upon the complexity of the contact lenses being evaluated. Our patients are surprised to discover that our prices for contact lenses are less than 1-800-CONTACTS, Wal-Mart, and most other online contact lens retailers.
